Watermael Room Drones
These drones were recorded between 2015 and 2016 with my friend, fellow musician and sound engineer, Keng-Wai Chane Chick Te (https://freesound.org/people/keng-wai-chane-chick-te/). The technique used is directly inspired by the works of Alvin Lucier (I’m Sitting in a Room) and Jacob Kierkegaard (4 Rooms). The technique involves recording the « silence » of a room, playing it back through speakers, and re-recording the signal. This process is repeated multiple times until the natural resonances of the space emerge, revealing its distinctive harmonics.
For a few years, I lived in a very special house that I loved deeply and where I composed a lot of music. This place also served as a rehearsal and sound experimentation space with Keng-Wai, who performed live with me as part of my project. Knowing that I would eventually have to leave this house for good, I wanted to preserve a sonic memory of this inspiring space through this experiment.
Five Minutes To Eat Jack (2006-2013)
Five Minutes to Eat Jack was an experimental noise duo formed in 2006. Built around guitar and drums, it became a space to explore improvisation, texture and intensity, with me as guitarist and composer. Over the years, the project evolved almost exclusively through rehearsals and live performance. Although we always intended to produce a proper recording, a combination of circumstance and our own lack of organisation meant that no finished release ever materialised.
What remains today is this demo, recorded as part of the soundtrack for a student theatre production. Papy, from the band La Pince, captured the session using just a handful of SM57 microphones. Everything was recorded live in a single take. The sound is rough, lo-fi and heavily compressed, but it remains the most faithful document of what Five Minutes to Eat Jack was at the time.
